PHASE I – Mapping & Photos

Idea / Rationale

Creating a valuable and high-quality Quest, you must collect and submit a number of items in a controlled sequence. All assignments will eventually lead you to the finished Quest that can be published, shared, and used by others. However, there are many steps to be completed before then, and it’s best to approach them a few at a time.

In Phase I, you will begin collecting items that will benefit you at a later stage. Some of the items, like the map, will help you guide the project along, while others, like the images, will serve you towards the end of the project. In order to minimize your needs to visit a Place more than a couple of times, we’ve grouped the items for you to collect first.

Phase I is mapping and photos. Your task is to collect information that is readily available in your community. Please see the next section for more detailed information.

What To Do Right Now

  1. Visit your Place
    1. Go to the location of your Quest. If you’re unsure of where to go, make sure you look at multiple alternatives, and pick the one you like best.
  2. Take a hike around your Place
    1. A Quest should be a minimum of about 3/4 mile hike – is it?
    2. What will the visitor need to think about when doing your Quest – is water available, need for hiking boots, uphill, no bathrooms nearby, etc.
  3. Take photos of you Place
    1. Design your Quest route so that it stops in about 5 places – take really good photos of these places for later use.
    2. Use cameras from the Valley Voyages Tech Inventory – sign them out on an individual basis from Mr. Testa.
  4. Draw a map of your Place
    1. Draw a rudimentary map of your place, including trails, roads, buildings, your Quest hike, and other important details.
    2. Orient your map – which may is north?
  5. Take notes about your Place
    1. Take copious (that “a lot”) of notes of all the little details that will help you create a quality Quest.

Graded Items

  1. A written, detailed description of the following:
    1. Description of Place – a brief description of your Place
    2. Items for Planning Ahead – parking, etc.
    3. Getting There – how to get to your Place
  2. Pictures / Images of your Place
    1. Collect / take a minimum of 5 quality photos that relate to the 5 points of interest at your Place, and that will serve as stopping points along your Quest.
    2. Submit them using the link below, noting the instructions for how to do so…
  3. A Map of your Place
    1. Map can be hand drawn, or crafted electronically.
    2. Map should include the minimum following information:
      1. Compass Rose indicating cardinal directions
      2. Major roads around the Place
      3. Major and minor land features, such as trails, hills, lakes, etc.
      4. Other items, like buildings, etc.
      5. Quest Route
      6. Stopping Points (that coordinate with the pictures)
